1 Running head: GLOBAL WARMING This essay is not embedded with non-factual giberish, instead it is a look at hard facts for and against fear of global warming. According to the National Academy of Sciences, the Earth's surface temperature has risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit in the past century, with accelerated warming during the past two decades. But, is this attributable to human activities? Have human activities altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases ? primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide? Or has the environment itself been the cause and the environment itself the solution? According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the United States produces approximately 6.6 tons (almost 15,000 pounds carbon equivalent) of greenhouse gasses per person every year. And emissions per person have increased about 3.4% between 1990 and 1997. Most of these emissions, about 82%, are from burning fossil fuels to generate electricity and power our cars.
