Paige Sprague Diversity of Life NRM 2307 Benefit of the Doubt (Article at bottom of page) The Swine Flu This article centers on what action should be taken in the United States government towards the Swine Flu that is currently plaguing Mexico. The problem is how serious is the problem. The Obama administration could create serious repercussions based on the plan of action they take. They are facing tough decisions because of the way virus strains function. “Scientists have yet to figure out what causes the mutations, when they will occur and what makes certain viruses more lethal than others (Altman D1).” Reports of deaths have only occurred in Mexico currently. This problem is greatly related to the study of evolution and has unforeseen consequences. This could be because of several factors. Often some populations are affected more dramatically from others. This could be from the immunities these populations have. It could also be from wrongfully reported deaths. Not much is certain right now. This flu is related to evolution in how it has become prevalent in humans. In biodiversity we use the study of evolution to calculate how species have changed over time. Viruses are a good example because they multiply and mutate very rapidly. Scientists use evolution to predict which strains of flu viruses will most likely appear each year to create a vaccine. The problem is there isn’t currently a vaccine for this new swine virus. Researchers will have to use the tools of biodiversity to formulate how to eliminate the virus in society before it becomes a pandemic. I think it is interesting to learn about but also very frightening. I believe in population control but this is a horrible way to do it and I think anyone who thinks this virus that is killing people is a positive thing is severely mistaken.
