2010 NPB 12, SG02, Page: 1 NPB12: Study Guide 2 These are some representative test questions, and some exercises that will help you think about the material covered in lecture. These will not be graded, but I encourage you to make an honest effort to solve these problems. The answers are also on the website, but TRY TO DO THEM BEFORE YOU LOOK AT THE ANSWERS! Multiple choice questions. For each question, circle the answer that you think is most correct. Some are close, but one could argue that they were wrong. Choose the one that has the weakest argument to be wrong, and the correspondingly greatest argument to be right. 1) The membrane potential a) refers to the voltage across the cell membrane when K + can move across freely. b) refers to the current across the membrane at rest. c) can change depending on what channels and pores are opened or closed d) repolarizes, then depolarizes, then hyperpolarizes during an action potential. e) never changes unless voltage-gated channels are opened. 2) Voltage-gated Na + channels a) open when the membrane potential reaches the activation threshold and stay open until the membrane potential returns to the resting potential. b) open and then close and inactivate automatically within about 1 msec. c) are opened when glutamate binds to the channel. d) are opened and held opened by tetrodotoxin (TTX). e) are located at the nodes of Penfield. 3) A person that had polio that killed all of their ventral motor neurons a) can’t feel it when you touch their foot. b) will still have a knee-jerk reflex. c) can’t breath because the part of the nervous system that controls when you should breath is damaged. d) can’t breath because the part of the nervous system that controls the muscles you use to breath are damaged. e)
