September 3, 2010 Is this your first online class? Lab 2: Sections 1.1 and 1.2 Students were asked to complete a survey with the following questions: Q How many times did you exercise last week? C What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? C What kind of pet do you own? (Pick your favorite pet if you have more than one—don’t get too specific: dog, cat, fish, none, etc. is what we want.) Q Approximately how many office hours a week do you generally attend during a semester? C If you could choose any state in the US to visit, which one would you choose? C What is the name of your favorite t.a.? 1. (3 points, 0.5 points each) Which of the survey questions above will have categorical responses? Which will have quantitative responses? Label each one with a Q or a C next to the dot. 2. (2 points) Do you think there was any response bias on any of the survey questions? If so, which questions were most likely to receive biased answers? Why? What is the name of your favorite t.a.? I believe there would be a bias response because a t.a. grades this lab report and therefore most students would respond favorably toward their stat t.a. 3. (2 points) Choose one of the survey questions above and change the wording to be as unclear and confusing as possible. Original: If you could choose any state in the US to visit, which one would you choose? Reworded: If choosing a favorite, what state would visit based upon that choice? 4. (2 points) Choose one of the survey questions above and change the wording to be as biased as possible. Studies show those who have dogs as pets are of higher intelligence. What kind of pet do you own? 1
