In his practice, civil engineer has many diverse and important encounters with soil : - he uses excavated soil as a construction material; - he must design structures to retain soils from excavations and underground openings; - he uses natural soil deposits as a foundation to support structures and embankments; and - he encounters soil in a number of special problems. The branch of civil engineering that deals with the problems of design and construction of systems that include soils and depend on soil properties is geotechnical engineering (in Greek geo means earth ). In performing the geotechnical engineering tasks, geotechnical engineer relies upon soil mechanics , a discipline hat systematically organizes principles and knowledge concerning the engineering behavior of soil. In everyday engineering practice the most important aspect of soil behavior is the behavior under various natural and man-made loads and deformations which can affect civil engineering structures in various ways. SOIL MECHANICS is branch of GEOTECHNICAL ENGINERRING , which is branch of CIVIL ENGINEERING. Geotechnical engineering, and thus soil mechanics, is dealing with engineering problems involving earth (i.e., ground, soil). Geotechnical engineers are therefore concerned with the natural materials found at or near the surface of the earth . These materials are either soil or rock . Basic differences between soil and rock are that soil is usually much softer and weaker than rock, and that a chunk of soil will disintegrate in water while a piece of rock will not.
