GENDER "SEX" - biologically MALE or FEMALE? GENETIC SEX: Chromosomes (XX, XY, etc.) HORMONES: Androgens or Estrogens predominating ANATOMICAL SEX: gonads, uterus, vulva, vagina, penis, etc. SEX ROLES: behavioral patterns the society deems appropriate because of your biological sex. SEX TYPING: roles, attitudes, behaviors the society deems appropriate because of your biological sex. e.g. Woman gives birth = Woman is primary caretaker of baby Man physically stronger = Man primary breadwinner INTERSEX: You possess varying amounts of male and female biological characteristics. GENDER ASSIGNMENT: The labeling of baby as "male" or "female" GENDER IDENTITY: Your personal, social, legal status as "male" or "female" GENDER ROLE: Role(s) you are expected to play as a "male" or "female" in your culture. GENDER TYPING: Process by which we acquire behavior deemed appropriate to our gender. By about age 2, we know we're a "boy" or a "girl" because of what we've been taught. We still don't know genitals are involved in this. We still don't know gender is permanent. Transgenderism: Living part- or full-time in the other gender’s role and finding it psychologically comforting to do so. Transsexualism: Your gender identity is different from your biological sex. e.g. You have a female-looking body, but you feel very strongly that you are not a girl. “Trapped in the wrong body” (Check out Kate Bornstein’s book, Gender Outlaw ) Transvestism: Cross-dressing for purposes of sexual arousal.

Intersex: You were born with sex organs and/or genitals that do not seem to fit the typical definitions of “male” or “female.” At least one source describes intersex individuals words, what was once called hermaphrodite .
