Restaurant industry – What did you want to be when you grew up? Didn’t have specific aspirations, wanted to go to college. Didn’t have parents who told them a lot about what they did. Imagined interactions After first being hired - Learn the menu knowledge, be professional. Felt he had something to prove, do every task as best he could. In a restaurant environment you become part of the culture whether you want to or not. Close knit group. Hang out with workers outside of work, go surfing, etc. Did your behaviors line up with company’s values? “Customer is always right” He would deviate a bit the longer he worked there. Did not care about company values, he knew what was best. Different interactions called for different responses Brother was a server at Olive Garden. He put in a good word for him after high school. Food server gets chas every night, flexible schedules. First day was training, culture shock. Group of seven people met every day for hours to train. Be professional even in uncomfortable situations – unsigned checks, unsatisfied with meals
