Ryan Stevens January 19, 2006 AP US History Block 1 Chapter 35 Reading Guide Douglas MacArthur - He was the main military leader for the United States during World War II in Asia. He was key in rebuilding Japan after the war and played a big role in preventing Communist takeover in Korea. Battle of Midway- This was a battle that took place on June 5, 1942 against the Japanese in the Pacific. This was a key stop for the United States because it changed the tide of the war into the US’s favor. With a loss at Midway the entire northern rim would be defenseless. Chester Nimitz- He was the Commander and Chief of Pacific Forces for the US and allied forces throughout World War II. He was placed at this position after the attack on Perl Harbor on December 7 th . He was a leader in many battles in the Pacific including the battle at Midway. "island hopping" (leapfrogging)- This was done in the Philippenes.This refers to a way of travel by which one stops at individual islands making many small trips rather than
