Ryan Fessler PS 118 1/27/2009 Cold War Event The Cold War event that I decided to find a news article on was Vietnam. The main point of the article, titled “What the People Say,” is that the citizens and peasants must be in compliance and have faith in the South Vietnam government. Vietnam peasants do not have much confidence in the government because whenever soldiers arrive in their villages, they end up imposing their will on them. The soldiers will set curfews, check identity papers, and arrest people suspected of helping the Reds. The government has also armed many peasants to fight the Reds, but end up robbing each other or joining the Viet Cong. There is one good thing about the government presence, however. One grateful farmer claims that, “Many times they have saved our village. They stand guard all night and part of the day. They have no time for their own work and don’t get paid enough. But they still protect us.” 1 During this time, the peasants do not really know what would be best for them. The Viet Cong or the South Vietnam
