Alexandra Wittenberg September 20, 2010 Augustine: On Christian Theology Augustine is adamant on insisting that magic is a source of demonology and believes that practicing witchcraft is in fact sinning and going against everything Christian theology strives for. Augustine distinguishes between the “good” (those who worship g/d) and the “bad,” (those who worship anything besides g/d). Augustine condemns everyone from astrologers to users of amulets and remedies and even people who wear earrings because of superstitions into participating in witchcraft and dabbling with the devil. Augustine interprets the bible with the utmost literal sense, and doesn’t seem to think humans have the capacity to derive truths other than from the bible: “Just as there are deceptive human ideas of human origin about the stars, which g/d created and ordered, so there are many ideas, committed to paper by many writers, apparently derived systematically from human surmises . . . .” The logic here seems to be that humans that
