Friday 8/27/2010 Myth Analysis: Mueller (nature) – Zeus is the weather god and lightning is his weapon. Primitive Greek people believe that the gods did not look like people. So, they thought Zeus’ true form was a lightning bolt. Jung (collective unconscious) - animus (masculine) – female idea that men are more violent and aggressive o ex. Semele is destroyed by Zeus - Anima (female) – male idea that all women want to make them crazy and confused o Ex. Nagging of Semele Levi-Strauss (conflict) - Zeus & Hera are in conflict due to infidelity - Semele & Hera are in conflict over male attention - Zeus & Semele are in conflict over his true form Freud (sex) - idea of sex starts very young - males first thing they notice is she doesn’t have something he has o castration anxiety – men are scared of having their penis cut off - females think that he has something that she doesn’t have o Penis Envy – women spend their lifetime wishing they had a penis - Semele wants to see Zeus “as he really is” = naked o
