Friday 9/24 Pan - god of the woods, participated in the rites of Dionysus - the only god who’s represented as not being fully human - part man/part goat - he viewed a nymph and began chasing after her, she ran away, but she is required to stay in her area - she prayed to the gods to do something to stop the assault, they transformed her into a clump of wreaths, so he cut some of the wreaths and fashioned them into an instrument “pan pipe” Narcissus and Echo - Echo was one of the few nymphs who wasn’t assigned to a place - Echo would chat with Hera while Zeus would go off an be with other women - Hera punished Echo to stop this trickery by taking away her ability to speak, she could only echo the last few words people said - Along came Narcissus… - Narcissus went to a pool in the woods and began swimming - Echo stood by the pool and Narcissus said “go way” so she echoed - … “possess me” - Echo prayed to the gods that Narcissus would be cursed with the love for someone that he couldn’t possess
