Monday 8/30/2010 Anthropomorphism – process by which you give human qualities to non-human forms; man making “god” in man’s image - Ge and Uranus had children o But Uranus hated his children for being ugly o He stuffed the children back into mother earth o Ge was in a lot of pain so her youngest child Cronus agreed to help his mother. Ge gave Cronus an iron sickle (curved blade). o When Uranus came to sleep with Ge, Cronus cut off his father’s genitals and threw it into the sea o Cronus’ parts floated in the sea and gathered foam which then spawned Aphrodite “the goddess of passionate love” o This story was obviously illogical and not concerned with realistic details - A castrated male can not make children, so Uranus loses his status as chief god, and Cronus became the chief god o Cronus marries his sister Rhea o He didn’t want the same thing to happen to him, so he swallowed his children whole o Rhea consults her parents Ge and Uranus who tell her to wrap up a rock and give that to him instead. o
