Metabolism— The sum of the chemical processes that occur within a living organism  in order to maintain life. Uptake of matter and energy Conversion to usable form Synthesis of cellular materials Elimination of waste products Two types of metabolic pathways: 1. Catabolic   pathways—pathways   involved   in   degradation;   energy   releasing;  creates more disorder. (Energetically down hill) 2. Anabolic  pathways—pathways involved in syntheses; energy requiring; creates  order. (Energetically uphill)  Catabolism— The breakdown of complex  molecules in living  organisms to form  simpler ones, together with the release of energy; destructive metabolism. Degradation, releases energy Anabolism— The synthesis of complex molecules in living organisms from simpler  ones together with the storage of energy; constructive metabolism. Synthesis, consumes energy *Organisms transfer energy Energy— is the capacity to do work. Joules

Review types of energy: Potential energy— energy of position. Kinetic energy— energy of motion. *Energy transfers are subject to the  laws of thermodynamics.
