Class Exercises and Discussion Topics on Gender (ch.11, the film, and the articles) Group 1 Please describe how your lives might be different if you were born as a different gender. This can be done as an imaginative exercise. You may need to read chapter 11 and the articles (i.e. ‘you’ve come a long way, baby’; ‘Domestic violence: across-cultural view) from the packet regarding gender issues to walk you through various stages of life from birth to the present. In your group, compare men and women’s responses. How would the responses differ 50 or 100 years ago? What would be similar? What does that tell us about continuity and change in gender in today’s society? Group 2 After reading Ruth Sidel’s article in the packet (Mixed messages), have students from your group bring in a magazine they have recently received or bought. Examine the portrayal of gender roles in the visual content of the stories and/or the advertising. Are there differences in the portrayals of gender in different types of magazines? What are some of your observations about the types of gender images that we see in these magazines? Do they reflect Sidel’s observations on ‘Mixed Messages’ in relation to
