Some useful things to know for Exam 3: GENERAL concepts from Exam 1& 2 are used in Exam 3 but not examined directly. Don’t forget your NON programmable calculator! Current draft has 30 questions. NOT all of these are math. Chapter 3: Be able to do stoichiometry calculations including, % yield, % purity and limiting reagents. Always check to see the equation is balanced! Chapter 4: Be able to name acids and bases. Ternary acid names are based on the polyatmic ions listed in Table 2.5 or are similar (same group so similar name). What is a strong/weak/non electrolyte? (Know the definitions of each). Remember for example that a strong acid would also be a strong electrolyte. Four strong acids are listed in the Ch 4 notes, and remember a lot of Group I & II hydroxides are strong bases. All soluble (see later) salts would be considered to be strong electrolytes. Its good to know ammonia is a common weak base, and acetic acid is a common weak acid. Be able to do concentration and dilution calculations involving units of molarity (there are other units but we'll use those in CH302). Be able to use the solubility rules (PROVIDED) to determine if something is soluble or if a precipitate will form when two solutions are mixed. Be able to write a total ionic equation or a net ionic equation for a given precipitation reaction, and pick out the spectator ions. Be able to write and balance an acid-base
