However Cell Respiration is used to burn carbohydrates to form ATP that is used by all cell types to fuel the activities that sustain them {the energy molecule used to fuel the life functions of a cell}. Aerobic respiration results in approximately 38 ATP molecules/glucose molecule. Anerobic respiration result sin approximately 2 ATP/glucose molecule. (ppt) First Law of Thermodynamics energy can’t be created or destroyed our bodies require energy for organs to work we obtain that energy from our food. The web site and Randy’s slides on nutrition are important to help you relate to the concept of Calories [Kcals] in your diet & your nutritional needs [based, in part on your activity levels]. For example, Consuming 1,110 Cals is enough to run at a speed of 7 miles/hour for 1.4 hours [check out how this is calculated, as you may have to calculate an example like this for the Prelim.

How do living things (or single cells) harvest energy from nutrients? As we said previously, ATP is involved. Of the millions of ATP molecules in many cells, about half are used every second to provide energy. Energy is made available through the breaking of phosphate bonds (ATP releases a P and becomes ADP). Therefore, ATP must be continually recycled or else it will be used up in two seconds. The question becomes how is energy from organic nutrient molecules bound to ATP and how does ATP transfer energy? RECALL:
