EMCH 213 STRENGTH OF MATERIALS SPRING 2010 Days Time Room Wednesday 9:30 – 10:20 am 208 TMZKO Friday 8:30 – 10:20 am 208 TMZKO Instructor: Dr. Ivan Esparragoza Office: 207K TMZKO Classroom Building Hours: Office hours M, W, F 10:30 am – 12:20 pm (or by appointment) Phone: (610) 892 1420 E-mail: Web: Course Description Introduction to the study of the mechanics of materials. Topics include: axial stresses and strains; shear stresses and strain; torsion; bending and shear stresses in beams; deformation of beams; combined loading; stress transformation; columns. Course Objectives Develop the relationship between the loads applied to a non-rigid body and the internal forces and deformations induced in the body. Study the relations between stress and strain for different type of loadings (tension, compression, torsion, and bending). Develop adequate techniques for finding the required dimensions of a member of a specified material to carry a given load subject to stated specifications of stress and deformation. Study the general state of stresses and strains in a given loaded member and the magnitude and direction of the principal stresses. Prerequisite MATH 141 EMCH 211 Textbooks Mechanics of Materials , F. Beer, E. R. Johnston, J. DeWolf, and Mazurek. McGraw-Hill 5 th Ed. Course Contents 1. Introduction. Concept of Stress 2. Stress and Strain Axial Loading 3. Torsion 4. Pure Bending 5. Analysis and Design of Beams for Bending 6. Shearing Stresses in Beams 7. Transformations of Stress and Strain 8. Deflection of Beams 9.
