Nafe Qureshi 06/01/09 34135790 EXPERIMENT # 1 Learning Basic Operations Introduction A) The purpose of this experiment was to become familiar with the laboratory. Basic laboratory operations like measuring mass and volume, using vacuum filtration, and drying solids were learned. We first start with cleaning the glass wear then with clean lab equipment we weighed the preservative and then mixed it cautiously with the acid. Then chilled the solution, which caused the reaction to go to completion, which subsequently produced a testable amount of the product. The solid product was then subject to vaccum filtration. Air dried the solid and weighed it to check how much product was there in respect to theoretical yield. Chemical Reaction Hydrochloric acid was added to a solution of sodium benzoate. The sodium benzoate dissociates into benzoate ions and sodium ions in water: C 6 H 5 COONa C 6 H 5 COO - + Na + . The hydronium ion is formed when a proton transfers from an HCl molecule to water: HCl + H 2 O Cl - + H 3 O + . Protons transfer from H 3 O + to the benzoate ions to make benzoic acid: C 6 H 5 COO - +H 3 O + C 6 H 5 COOH + H 2 O. The net reaction is C 6 H 5 COONa + HCl C 6 H 5 COOH + NaCl. Procedure/ Results
