Jessica Gupta 10/17/06 TA: Mr. Wang Introduction: Experiment 32: Synthesis and Spectral Analysis of Aspirin In this experiment we emulated what pharmaceutical companies did and performed an Acylation reaction of salicylic acid to form aspirin. Substances involved in this experiment: Reaction: Procedure: To a 5 ml conical vial we added 1ml of acetic anhydride and 3mmol of salicylic acid. Next we added one drop of sulfuric acid and heated the vial in a water bath of 50 degrees Celsius and allowed for the mixture to dissolve completely. We then removed the vial from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature. After it had cooled we put the contents of the vial into a small beaker, added 6 ml of cold water, and put the beaker in an ice bath so that it would form a precipitate. After a heavy precipitate was formed, we used vacuum filtration with a Hirsch funnel to isolate the crude product. This product was collected, cooled, and then diluted using a 2:1 ratio mixture of water and 95%
