X 100 92.5% NAFE QURESHI T.A: John French Person # 34135790 Introduction: Heating Under Reflux Synthesis of Salicylic Acid From Wintergreen Oil: Aspirin can be manufactured from two starting materials that both have salicylic acid as their intermediate. The most common starting material, the one that most commercially marketed aspirin is made from, is benzene, a product of petroleum refining. The other starting material is methyl salicylate, which occurs naturally in wintergreen oil. In accordance with the new-age trend for organic foods and products, some people seem to believe that the “organic aspirin,” derived from wintergreen oil, is somehow different and more natural than aspirin made form benzene. In this experiment we tested the validity of this conception by preparing salicylic acid from the soponification of methyl salicylate and a strong base and analyzing it to see whether or not it was the same as salicylic acid made from benzene. In order to get the correct results, we had to separate
