Chapter 2: The Evolution of Management Thinking I. Management and Organization Social Forces are the aspects of a culture that guide and influence relationships among people – their values, needs, and standards of behavior. A great social force today is the changing attitudes, ideas, and values of Gen X and Gen Y employees. Political Forces are the influences of political and legal institutions on people and organizations. Economic Forces are forces that affect the availability, production, and distribution of a society’s resources among competing users. II. Classical Perspective A management perspective that emerged during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that emphasized a rational, scientific approach to the study of management and sought to make organizations efficient operating machines. o Scientific Management A subfield of the classical management perspective that emphasized scientifically determined changes in management practices as the solution to improving labor productivity. See exhibit 2.2 on page 43. Lacked social context and workers’ needs, it led to increased conflict and sometimes violent classes between managers and employees. o Bureaucratic Organizations A subfield of the classical management perspective that emphasized management on impersonal, rational basis through such elements as clearly defined authority and responsibility, formal record keeping, and separation of management and ownership. See exhibit 2.3 on page 43.
