Chapter 16: Motivation *See Manager’s Challenge on page 521. I. The Concept of Motivation Motivation is the arousal, direction, and persistence of behavior. An Intrinsic Reward is the satisfaction that one receives in the process of performing a particular action. An Extrinsic Reward is a reward given by another person, typically a manager, and includes promotions, pay increases and bonuses. See exhibit 16.1 on page 522. The most talented and innovative people seek intrinsic benefits, rather then extrinsic benefits. II. Foundations of Motivation The following are the four distinct perspectives on employee motivation. o Traditional Approach Began with the scientific approach to management discussed in chapter two. Pertains to a systematic analysis of an employee’s job for the purpose of increasing efficiency. It emphasized what was referred to as the economic man – which stressed that people would work harder for higher pay. o Human Relations Approach The economic man was gradually replaced wit the social man . It began with the Hawthorne Studies at the Western Electric Plant discussed in chapter two. It emphasized that meeting social needs was more important than meeting economic o Human Resources Approach Read under heading on page 524. o Contemporary Approach Read under heading on page 524. III. Content Perspectives on Motivation Content Theories are a group of theories that emphasize the needs to motivate people. o Hierarchy of Needs Theory The Hierarchy of Needs Theory is a content theory that proposes that people are motivated by 5 categories of need: physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization; exist in a hierarchical order. See exhibit 16.2 on page 525.
