Chapter 19: Managerial and Quality Control * See Manager’s Challenge on page 631. I. The Meaning of Control Organizational Control is the systematic process through which managers regulate organizational activities to make them consistent with expectations established in plans, targets, and standards of performance. II. Organizational Control Focus Control can focus on events before, during, or after a process. The three types of control are formally called, feedforward , current , and feedback . See exhibit 19.1 on page 633. o Feedforward Control Feedforward Control is control that focuses on human, material, and financial resources flowing into the organization; also called preliminary or preventative control. Purpose is to ensure that input quality is high enough to prevent problems when the organization performs its tasks. It also involves forecasting trends in the environment and managing risk. o Concurrent Control Concurrent Control is control that consists of monitoring ongoing activities to ensure that they are consistent with standards. It assesses current work activities, relies on performance standards, and includes rules & regulations for guiding employee tasks and behaviors. It also involves ways in which an organization influences employees (cultural norms, values, etc.). o Feedback Control Feedback Control is control that focuses on the organization’s outputs; also called postaction or output control.
