BIPN 144 Week 7 Notes (Part 2) Note: This has not been reviewed by Dr. Bier and may have errors. Always trust the professor over these notes. Dr. Bier began this day with a review of the Sperry experiment and the hemisected retin/ hemisected tectum experiments. He also pointed out that Eph interaction is repulsive. The axons have a sort of set point of how much Eph they can tolerate, and when they reach that point they stop. Here’s an analogy, think of the axons as boats sailing toward the tectum. Eph‐ Receptors are like holes in the top of the boat. As you approach the posterior end of the tectum, the weather gets worse and worse with more and more rain. It will take longer for boats with only a few holes (Nasal Retina) to fill with rain and sink than boats that are riddled with holes (Temporal Retina). I hope that helps. He then described an experiment where the researchers cut out different areas of the retinal. They then took anterior and posterior portions of the tectum and ground them up, and eliminated everything but the surface receptors. They then plated out the eyes on substrate formed from the ground up tectum.
