Sound wave properties A) Linearity of sound: Waves from opposite directions will sum their amplitude when passing B) Time domain - Temporal signal structure/waveform. C) Amplitude modulation – Change in loudness of an auditory signal D) Frequency domain – Frequency structure of a signal E) Basilar Membrane in the cochlea of ears separates frequencies. From thick to thin F) Organ of Corti : pressure detector that elongates and contracts hair cells II. Fourier Analysis: Breakdown of a complex signal into a set of sine waves A) Broken down into the sum of sine waves of relative amplitudes and phase displacements B) Waveform: x-axis = time ; y-axis = amplitude Represented as a combination of sine waves bunched together very closely C) Frequency Spectrum: x-axis = frequency ; y-axis = amplitude Represented as very short sine waves with one to a few tall, distinct peaks
