Monday October 11, 2010 Announcements: -Test is now out of 29 not 30 (score now 23/29) -Quiz 4 is graded -Essay assignment: due 11/17, pick region and chose a theory (well- reasoned) that best fits as an explanation of cities and states in that region, THESIS!, cite evidence, ideal paper would have-clear thesis, well supported w/ specific cited evidence, counter argument, 5-6 pages, 20% of final grade (take rough draft to TA, OH: T 11-12, F 10- 11; Buttrick 4-22) Reconstructing Social and Political Structure TA Dan O’Maley -Social organization: the rules and structures that govern relation w/in a group -Christopher Hawke’s Ladder of Inference: technology, subsistence- economics, social/political institutions, religion and spiritual (hardest to explain) -Multiple lines of evidence: monumental works, ceramics, artifacts, and funerary practices -Artifacts are symbols: material culture represents symbolic meaning. Important life transitions often marked by material goods
