  Where does photosynthesis occur? In chloroplasts (for eukaryotic cells) Not every plant cell has chloroplasts Thus, not every plant cell can perform photosynthesis. But every green part of a plant has chloroplasts Note: some prokaryotic cells perform  photosynthesis The reactions occur on the plasma membrane instead  of on the membrane of a chloroplast Concept 10.1: Photosynthesis converts

  Chloroplasts: The Sites of Photosynthesis in  Plants Leaves are the major locations of photosynthesis There are about half a million chloroplasts per  square millimeter of leaf surface. Mesophyll cells  of the leaf contain chloroplasts. Veins deliver water from the roots and carry off sugar  from mesophyll cells to other plant areas. Their green color is from  chlorophyll , the green  pigment within chloroplasts Light energy absorbed by chlorophyll drives the  synthesis of organic molecules in the chloroplast
