In this story the woman is referred to as "the american wife" and never mentions her real name. Her husband who we learn his name is george stays on the bed reading a book and hardly pays his wife any attention throughout the entire story. The "American Wife" seems childish in the way that she speaks by calling the cat a "kitty" and when she sits in the mirror and says . .. "I want to pull my hair back tight and smooth and make a big knot at the back that I an feel. I want to have a kitty to sit on my lap and purr when I stroke her. .. And I want to eat at a table with my own silver and I want candles. And I want it to be spring and I want to brush my hair out in front of a mirror and I want a kitty and I want some new clothes." It sounds like a child would that she wanted something. It also seems a little a vain but its probably because she feels neglect from her husband george that would never give her these things that most young women yearn for. With
