Chapter 2 1. Define energy, kinetic energy and temperature. Energy- the ability to do work Kinetic energy- energy due to motion Temperature- a measure of the average kinetic energy of the molecules of a substance 2. Know the three energy transfer processes and describe how each transfers energy. Also explain the role of each of these processes in heating and cooling the air. conduction- transfer of energy from molecule to molecule; can occur within a substance or when two substances are in direct contact with each other; energy is transferred from high to low temperature convection- transfer of energy by the movement of a fluid; in meteorology convection refers to the vertical transport of energy radiation- transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves no transfer medium is required 3. Define wavelength. Distance between crest to crest/troughs to trough 4. The three parts of the electromagnetic spectrum mentioned in class. UV (ultraviolet)- short wavelength
