Leslie Hughes HIST 3327-001 Personal Environmental History Each and every one of us has a personal environmental history that is shaped by many factors in our family’s lineage like location, economic status etc… Understanding this personal environmental history will better help us to understand our nation and world’s environmental history. I am 1/16 Comanche so I have a very strong Native American influence in my family. As I think back about the impacts my family has had on the environment I realize that we have carried the Native American spirit of working off the land and what it provides for us to sustain our way of life instead of changing it. I think this understanding is what makes me so passionate today about environmental conservation and preserving our natural earth as best we can. My family can be traced back to Quanah, Texas. Quanah is a very small, rural, agricultural city on the edge of where the Red River meets the Panhandle, right on the Texas/Oklahoma border. We still have a ranch to this day in Quanah where we have over 15,000 head of cattle just like we did more than 100 years ago. My great-grandparents and my grandfather who actually grew up on the ranch really understand the power that comes with living off a natural landscape, they had to understand and know thoroughly the places they were moving their cattle, and had to be good at it to sustain their lives. I
