In the graph below is a phase plane plot from the studies of competition between oligochaetes and polychaetes ( Hobsonia ) conducted by Gallagher, Gardner and Jumars in sandflats on the coast of Washington. Assume the carrying capacity of oligochaetes is 51. Let polychaetes be Species 1 and oligochaetes be Species 2. (a) Finish labeling the graph by labeling the axes and the endpoints of the isoclines. Label each isocline with “oligochaetes” or “polychaetes”. (b) Based on the phase plane, what is the predicted outcome of competition between oligochaetes and polychaetes? Indicate the equilibrium point(s) for this outcome on the graph. (c) Based on the data we looked at in lecture, what factor prevents this competitive interaction from reaching equilibrium in nature?
