Some of the important ways that the musical traditions of Africa and Europe are different are that African musical traditions came from roughly two thousand communal groups and at least that many dialects and languages. Also, African music has an oral tradition, where the songs were committed to memory and sang while working to make the day easier. Another difference is that in African music the line that separates the singer from the audience is blurred; often nonparticipants soon find themselves as part of the song. Dancing is also very closely related to the musical tradition of Africa, almost to the extent that someone will not think of the two as being separate. 2. The performance of traditional African music changed when Africans were brought to the New World as slaves in a couple of different ways. One way is that the songs were performed without instruments because colonies felt that the instruments were being used to coordinate a slave uprising. Another way that the performance
