Wayne Kocher MHL 145 – Durant 9-24-10 Chapter 3 Assignment A. Study Questions 1. New Orleans played an important role in the birth of jazz because of the cultural diversity of its earliest settlers. All of the immigrants who settled in New Orleans brought their own musical traditions with them, creating a rich musical gumbo. 3. The earliest jazz probably sounded like a combination of blues and ragtime with more instruments. 4. Jelly Roll Morton is pivotal to the development of jazz because he was one of the first pianists to synthesize the blues, ragtime, and European forms and styles into a new and original piano style. He is also considered to be the first jazz composer and jazz arranger as well wrote and arranged many pieces that eventually became early jazz standards. He was one of the first men to recognize that jazz can be applied to almost any type of music. He was one of the first to deliberately compose and arrange music for jazz composers. 5.
