The Fletcher Henderson Orchestra was important to the development of the jazz big band because it was one of the first swing bands, shaping the way for future swing big bands. The big band is credited for creating “ensemble swing,” which were written parts for different band members to sound like improvisations. The orchestra is also credited with “sectionalization,” which is simply dividing the band into two sections, brass and reed, and playing off each other. 3. The Cotton Club was important to the early career of Duke Ellington because it helped him establish himself as an excellent composer, arranger, and a bandleader, setting the bar very high for others. He was also able to gain national exposure at the club from being featured on live CBS radio broadcasts. It was at the Cotton Club that he was able to accomplish making a name for himself and his band, which would benefit him throughout the rest of his extensive career. 5.
