6. Acids and Bases                                                                                        Acids and bases are everywhere. They are especially important in balancing the acidity of our bodies and the environment. Acids and bases are natural opposites and react to neutralize each other. GOALS Perform acid-base reactions Describe what happens when an acid and base mix Identify the acid and the base in an acid-base reaction. Predict the products of an acid-base reaction. Materials: Your lab kit, vinegar, and distilled water. Safety: Wash hands before and after this lab. Do not work near food or drink. Acids are sour! These foods are acidic: Bases are bitter! Very few foods are bitter. Sometimes greens or Brussels sprouts are bitter when they are picked before they are ready. Orange peels, grapefruit peels and lime peels are often bitter to the taste. Part I. Perform a reaction mixing an acid and a base Directions: 1. Fill the test tube with about 1/2 inch full of vinegar (about 1 cm). 2.
