The simplest of the species on the cladogram are the sponges. This species is defined by their lack of true tissue but presence of specialized cells like the mesohyl. This outer layer of cells contains various cells that deliver nutrients and other specialized functions. This also allows all of the cells of sponges to become any cell through an ability called totipotency. The second branch is generally defined by the presence of diploblastic tissues and radial symmetry. They also contain the distinguishing feature of a stinging cell known as a cnidocyte, and an incomplete gut. These characteristics are found in species like hydra, coral, and obelia.
