Discussion: week 8 00:24 Punic Wars Conquest: land, slaves, wealth o Distribution   Senate. All belongs to consuls/pro-consuls Opportunity to get wealth, personal benefit Cutthroat competition makes better men, better society o Assembly of citizen soldiers Military Land (as they lose land, they lose power in Assembly) o Massive slave estates People are always trying to move up the Pyramid/Hierarchy of Society: hierarchy  within poor, hierarchy in senate, hierarchy even with slaves GRACCHI (120 BCE) Tiberius and Gaius   tribunes of assembly, unable to be touched by Senate,  sanctity of tribunes of assembly Land reforms Both politically assassinated o Violence becomes an increased part of political system o Supposed to be a system of checks and balances to prevent this violence;  they resort to political assassination o Undermined the fundamental part of checks/balances system
