This will be my last journal entry. Due to my depleting health I will not be around much longer and would like to leave behind information that could be necessary for future generations. I will start at the history of how our family's situation has come to be. Our Cherokee ancestors came to this country thousands and thousands of years ago. It is being said that the first of our ancestors arrived around the ice-age approximately 20,000-30,000 years ago (American West, n.d.). We traveled from Siberia to Alaska via a land bridge which once connected the two land masses (Wikipedia 2009). We spread throughout the Americas and established many different culturally distinct nations and tribes. We had homes in New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and a large part of Kentucky and Tennessee (Son of the South, 2008). In the 1500's Europeans first arrived in America (American West, n.d.). They dressed so differently and spoke in a different dialect which at that time was not known. They had steel knives and swords, big cannons, mirrors, and earrings, copper and brass kettles. Their skin was pale in color compared to our dark reddish-brown complexion (Son of the South, 2008). Their hands and feet were considerably larger and the way they had their hair was so different. Relations between us and the newcomers were fine for awhile, but the Europeans did not believe
