Ethnic Problems Faced During German Immigration 2 Germany has had a great influence on the United States of America and making it what it is today. Many of the immigrants who came to this country were German born. Though there were great periods of discrimination towards German-Americans, they remained strong and helped to shape America into the great country it is today. Around the beginning of the 18 th Century, Germans began to flee their homeland in search of less violent conditions in other western European countries. Approximately 3,000 German immigrants made their way to New York in 1709. This was the beginning of a large migrating movement that by 1745 led over 45,000 to Pennsylvania alone. After 1800, the immigration of Germans continued due to modernization and a increase in population growth which forced many of them from their respective family businesses. Immigration at this point became easier because of an advancement of technology in the form of the steamboat and steam train (Oracle ThinkQuest Education Foundation, n.d.). Many of the Germans that immigrated to the United States began their new lives as farmers on the East Coast and throughout the Midwest. In 1870, one third of the agricultural industry consisted of German (American born) farmers. Out of a feeling of comfort, Germans were known to gather together to live in their own communities, also know as “German Town”.
