1) Afterbirth – Placenta and fetal membranes. 2) Amniocentesis – A procedure in which amniotic fluid is removed from the uterus and tested to determine whether genetic or anatomical defects exist in the fetus. 3) Amnion – The inner membrane that forms a fluid-filled sac surrounding and protecting the embryo and fetus. 4) Amniotic fluid – Fluid in the amnion. 5) Artificial insemination – Introduction of semen into the uterus or oviduct by other than natural means. 6) Braxton-Hicks contractions – Normal uterine contractions that occur periodically throughout pregnancy. 7) Cesarean section – Delivery of the fetus through a surgical opening in the abdomen and uterus. 8) Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) – A prenatal procedure used to determine whether genetic or anatomical defects exist in a fetus; an alternative to amniocentesis. 9) Colostrum – Yellowish liquid secreted from the breasts; contains antibodies and protein. 10) Ectopic pregnancy – A pregnancy occurring outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian
