Heredity and Disease Answer each question in detail. 1. Define the Functions of DNA, Genes and Chromosomes The function of DNA is to carry all of a person’s genetic information in chromosomes in cells. The functions of genes are to act as the basic physical unit of heredity. Genes pass a linear sequence of nucleotides along a segment of DNA that tells it coded instructions for the synthesis of RNA which is then transplanted into protein that expresses heredity. Genes are arranged in threadlike patterns called chromosomes which are in every cell. Each person carries 23 pairs of chromosomes which determine sex. The information carried in genes along the chromosomes is contained in DNA. Together these determine the uniqueness of organisms. These functions are designed to pass on our genetics and heredity. 2. Describe Several Inherited Diseases Caused by Chromosomal Abnormalities Inherited diseases caused by chromosomal abnormalities include muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, phenylketonuria, and sickle cell disease. If a protein necessary for bone formation is defective, short stature, or dwarfism results. In hemophilia a chemical called factor VIII, required for normal blood clotting, is defective because of an altered gene on an X chromosome. Phenylketonuria is an inherited disease cause by a defect in an enzyme that is needed to digest the amino acid phenylalanine and causes
