BS 148H Lecture 1 16:31 What is life?  Defined by Schrodinger is negative entropy  o Watson and Crick figured out the molecular structure of DNA and triplet  code  o Can life be reduced to chemistry (reductionism)? Yes and No There is no set definition of what is life “I know it when I see it” gambit What is the problem with order-entropy definition? o High risk of false positives, lots things that would not be classified as life  that have low entropy  What is the problem with sensitivity-reproduction definitions? o Things that aren’t alive still have capacity to reproduce and show  sensitivity such as fire Evolution as a definition of life  o Evolution is the fundamental property of which all other properties are  derived (Chao article) o Problem is this definition isn’t as practical for individual organisms as it is  for population
