Multicellular, heterotrophic, eukaryotes, w/o cell walls, that ingest food Animal cells have unique intercellular junctions Diploid state dominates (animals are all diploid except for gamete) Body Symmetry Most animals that move actively are bilateral o Bilateral symmetry is associated with cephalization concentrating on cephalic (head) end Cephalization also includes a central nervous system concentrated in the head Many radial animals are sessile forms (attached to a substratum) Protostomes vs. Deuterostomes A coelom is lined w/ mesoderm Vertebrates are chordates o Which are segmented, bilateral Deuterostomes Deuterostome cells are largely indeterminate in terms of what they become, they decide their fate much later than protostomes As in they can actually become twins! Body Cavities
