PSY 101H Lecture 6 19:07 Attending to Things Attention Perception selects object representations to focus on o Too many things to attend to at once, so the system has to filter What determines what attention selects? o Top-down processes  More knowledge driven, conscious processes We look for things o Bottom-up processes The raw unprocessed stimulus is what grabs your attention Things like a car about hit us grabs our attention o Both can also work together  Feature singletons (single thing in a field of view) can grab attention o Ex) a red line in a field of bunch of gray lines o Some things grab attention even if you don’t know what they’ll be o Some things grab attention if you know to look for them Looking for someone in crowd of people  o Your name mentioned in a conversation behind you and that grabs your  attention Called the
