The course objectives are as follows: 1. To understand the role of accounting in society and, in particular, how a company’s financial statements depict its financial health. 2. To understand the role of the independent audit in providing assurance about the financial health of a company. 3. To be able to identify earnings management techniques that can be used to portray a level of profitability and financial position that may not be warranted. 4. To know what are the ethical obligations imposed on accountants and auditors in the performance of their professional services. 5. To understand the role of the modern corporation in society and the claims to corporate resources of the shareholders and other stakeholders. 6. To know what are the elements of a corporate governance system and how corporate governance techniques protect the interests of the shareholders and other stakeholders. 7. To work in a group setting to analyze an ethical dilemma in accounting and be able to make a classroom presentation. 8.
