Supply-side economics- said that economic growth can be most effectively created using incentives for people to produce (supply) goods and services, such as adjusting income tax and capital gains tax rates. It was a proposition to cut taxes. Increased taxation steadily reduces economic trade between economic participants within a nation and that it discourages investment. Arthur Laffer. o Relate to: Ronald Reagan’s fiscal policies were largely based on supply-side economics. Reagan promised reduction in income tax rates and in capital gains tax rates. Brown v. Board of Education- 1954 court case that ruled “separate is not equal” which overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson decision of 1896. Ordered the desegregation of public schools throughout the nation. Ruled that racial segregation of public schools violates the 14 th amendment. SNCC- student nonviolent coordinating committee: one of the principal organizations of the Civil Rights movement. Was involved in the freedom rides and the 1963 march on Washington. Later focused on black power and protesting against the Vietnam war. Reagan Democrat- denotes traditionally democratic voters, specifically democrats who supported republican Ronald Reagan. Referred to blue collar voters who were traditionally democratic but voted Republican due to their conservative social views. Equal rights amendment (ERA)- guarantees equal rights for all Americans regardless of sex. Prohibited discrimination based on gender. Got rid of women’s role as housekeeper and men no longer supported their wives they supported themselves. Equal pay for equal work (posed a problem because companies had to meet a quota). Roe v. Wade- 1973- focused on a woman’s right to privacy pertaining to abortions. The consensus was that abortions are permissible up until the point where the fetus becomes a baby. Guarantees the right to abortion. “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” is the US military policy. The act prohibits any homosexual or bisexual person from disclosing his or her sexual orientation while serving in the US armed forces. The policy also requires that as long as gay or bisexual men and women in the military hide their sexual orientation, commanders are not allowed to investigate their sexuality.
