ESSAY #2 Intro: Explain how before the Great Depression the fed government played a limited role in the daily lives of  most Americans:  Prior to the great depression, the government operated under “laissez-faire capitalism”  where the government stood back and let the economy fix itself Government never gave citizens any “opportunity” because the limited role they played in  society shut down small businesses and the “common worker” and supported big  business. Government basically diminished competition.  After the depression hit, President Hoover had faith in the economy and believed it would  work itself out like it had in the past. He didn’t want to get government involved. Depressions were not something new in modern American history. The difference  between the great depression and other depressions was the way in which the government  responded.  Hoover had a strong faith in big business and in the capitalist system. He used the Smoot- Hawley Tariff Act which raised tariffs on imports. This backfired because foreign  countries stopped buying our goods which hurt us even more. The bonus army was when  war veterans demanded reparations early because they didn’t have any money after the  depression and Hoover released the US army on them and drove them out of their protest.  ( I don’t know if we have to be this specific but figured I’d throw it in ) Thesis: Something about how the new deal and great society reform altered the politics  and economics of both right and opportunity in the 20 th  century.  1 st  Body: Talk about the New Deal and what it did/its effects
