Friedel-Crafts Alkylation Reaction Synthesis of 1,4-Di- t -Butyl-2,5-Dimethoxybenzene Results and Discussion: This experiment was interesting, but tedious. It was difficult to keep the mixture at a low temperature while mixing and adding acid; this made for slow progress. Also, trying to extract the liquid from the mixture while leaving the crystals was extremely difficult. Multiple washings with solvent were necessary before suction filtration (both times). However, we recovered more product than expected. Our percent yield was as follows: 0.303g 1,4-dimethoxybenzene X 1 mole 1,4-dimethoxybenzene X 1 mole 1,4-Di- t -butyl- 138 grams 1 mole 2,5-dimethoxybenzene X 250 grams = 0.548grams 1,4-dimethoxybenzene 1 mole 1,4-di- t -butyl-2,5-dimethoxybenzene 0.189 grams actual yield = 34.5% percent yield 0.548 grams theoretical yield While that is not a high percent yield, we of course lost some product when we removed the solvent with a pipet, when we transferred the crystals to the suction filtration

Another possible source of product loss might be that we let the temperature rise too much during the addition phase of the experiment. Melting point analysis: The melting point of our product was 78-81, whereas the predicted melting point was 104-105. This indicates that our product probably was not very pure. Our percent yield calculation is therefore also somewhat inflated. Conclusion: Although we did not obtain a pure product for some reason, I feel that this experiment went very well. Even though this was the most complicated procedure so far, we executed it without any problems and obtained a relatively large amount of product.
