Largent 1 Michael Largent Mr. Boyt Advanced Writing 16 September 2008 Failure to Leave the Ground Leonardo da Vinci said that “For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return.” However, with the obstacles the airline industry is facing, many aviation students’ hunger for flight is left unfulfilled. Because of today’s rising gas prices, many aspiring pilots, including myself, are no longer able to return to the sky. The fuel crisis is also leading to fewer flights in operation, which limits the amount of available piloting careers. As a result, many aviation students are struggling to attain a job as a pilot due to expensive tuition, a lack of available jobs, and the amount of time spent in a pilot’s training. Among the many various degrees and programs at college universities, flight science is one of the most expensive undergraduate degrees to attain. The enormous amount of money spent in tuition is directly proportional to the price of aviation fuel. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), jet fuel is currently two dollars more expensive than gasoline, forcing aviation students to pay an additional fee for the fuel they use.
